This letter was written by a hateful, ignorant man to his own son after his boy came out to him. It reads:

James. This is a difficult but necessary letter to write. 

I hope your telephone call was not to receive my blessing for the degrading of your lifestyle. I have fond memories of our times together, but that is all in the past.

Don’t expect any further conversations with me. No communications at all. I will not come to visit, nor do I want you in my house.

You’ve made your choice though wrong it may be. God did not intend for this unnatural lifestyle.

If you choose not to attend my funeral, my friends and family will understand.

Have a good birthday and good life.

No present exchanges will be accepted.

I believe strongly that when “James” told this piece of rotten, worthless shit, unworthy of the title of “Dad”, that he was gay, all manner of stereotypes would have flashed up in his bigoted, ignorant mind.

Things like QUEEN and FAIRY and GIRLY BOY and SISSY. Images of his child being FUCKED LIKE A WOMAN and SQUEELING and FLAPPING HIS LIMP WRISTS. Wearing GLITTER and DRESSING IN WOMEN’S CLOTHES and PARADING AROUND NAKED ON A MARDI GRAS FLOAT. Thoughts of DISEASED AIDS FAGGOTS and SYPHILIS and DEATH and FLAMES IN HELL.

All the stereotypes our heteronormative, homophobic society has reinforced into all of us, all day, every day, our entire lives, and wrongfully brainwashed us into thinking are wrong, morally corrupt, and disgusting.

We all know someone who fits some of these stereotypes, and we all know that they are humans who either by choice or because they simply can’t help it, don’t “pass” as heterosexual. And yet they still deserve respect, and are far from being the Devil’s Spawn.

“James” might have been a stereotypical gay man. Or he might not have been. Or he might have been a bit of both. We don’t know. And neither does the animal he previously called “Dad”. That’s because “Dad” never gave himself the opportunity to find out. “Dad” just hit the BLOCK button.

Every time one of us writes NO QUEENS, NO FEMMES, NO SISSIES, REAL MEN ONLY, STRAIGHT ACTING ONLY, MASC ONLY, what we are doing is writing our own version of the letter reproduced above. We are writing it, we are putting a stamp on it, and we are posting it to members of our own community, making sure they know that they are not welcome in our house, in our lives, or even at our funerals.

So stop arguing with me that you are not being homophobic. Stop defending yourselves with “it’s just a preference.”

Think about that for a minute, and then go re-write your fucking profiles.
